My morning always starts with a meditation while I’m still in bed. I learned it from my wonderful spiritual teacher. It’s really simple. Before I get out of bed, I send out blessings to people. I go through my family members, friends, students, teachers, or whoever comes to my mind and send blessings to each one of them. I send out blessings like a bright light. It truly brings me joy. Although, it can be challenging if you try to send blessings to someone in your life who challenges you or makes you upset. I’m sure we can think of at least one person like that our lives that we also love.
For a long time, I had such a hard time sending blessings to one particular person. I thought about it and wanted to do it, but I just couldn’t do it. During a retreat with my spiritual teacher, he generously invited me to see if I could send a blessing to that person. I tried and kept resisting as usual. “There is no way I can send my blessing.” I almost gave up. After a long meditation, he invited me to reflect on what I experienced during the meditation. As I was walking down the hallway, I saw rain outside the window and saw the person’s sad face and tears in the rain. In that moment, I realized that the person was suffering. All of a sudden, I felt so much compassion toward that person. “I have to send blessings to that person!” I realized that I was also releasing my own suffering at the same time.
